NoMachine proudly announces the release of NX 1.5.0

ROME, Italy, July 25th, 2005. NoMachine, the creator of the innovative NX terminal server and remote access system, proudly announces the release of NX 1.5.0. The new release sports exciting new features that consolidate NX as one of the most advanced tools in the Linux world, enabling corporations and professionals to get secure access to their server-based applications over the Internet.

The much-awaited NX Server Manager offers all the power and the easiness of operation that corporate users expect from an enterprise-standard Terminal Service solution. Its graphical administration interface for Unix systems will make it possible to handle, from a central location, the deployment and maintenance of the NX desktop infrastructure in a distributed environment across a world-wide network. NoMachine will ship the NX Server Manager as a standard component of the NX Standard (ex-Small Business) and Enterprise Editions at no extra cost for its customers.

The second new element in 1.5.0 is the NX Web Companion. This new addition is a small Java applet and a plugin interface bridging the availability of the Web and the unmatched power of NX. Embedded in a Web page, the NX Web Companion lets users publish any corporate application on-demand, anywhere. Dryell says: "Although released as beta versions, both NX Plugin and NX Server Manager should still provide our customers with feature-complete products."

The introduction of a new X session type "XDM" allows NX Server to connect to a remote XDMCP server located anywhere on the corporate's backend. Users can now set up a XDMCP cluster, such as a MOSIX cluster, and load-balance the X connections among the available application servers. Dryell adds "Although this is not a final solution that NoMachine intends to deliver to its customers looking for load-balancing, it will solve some of the scalability problems that could be encountered when trying to deploy NX to thousands of users."

There are several new elements in the OSS components of NX, some of which have already been made available with snapshot releases. On the Windows side, NX offers unlimited number of colors in RDP sessions and better integration with the Windows environment. On the Unix side, NX comes with full support for the popular OpenGL extension and with an improved multimedia backend, making it easier to play sound produced by the applications running on the server. Huge improvements also went into the manageability of the remote session. NX now has the ability to resize the desktop on-the-fly or switch between an "eager" and a "lazy" mode, the latter skipping most of the image transfers to leave more bandwidth for the textual communication.

This much-awaited release is also accompanied by changes to the organization of Linux software packaging. NoMachine has introduced a new scheme that will make it easier to choose the right download among the available packages. Linux software is now made available in only three formats: a NX Server and Client for Linux RPM, a NX Server and Client DEB and a NX Server and Client statically compiled compressed TAR. NoMachine has reduced the set of dependencies to a bare minimum meaning that packages should install on any recent Linux distribution without having to satisfy any additional dependency.

Furthermore, there is a new naming convention for the 5 user-session product. Formerly known as the Small Business Edition, the Standard Edition will still be for the 1-5 user session niche. Dryell adds: "The new name is more suitable for the new licensing scheme that we are now implementing for the small user group. It is possible to have add-on user-packs of 5 sessions, a product that Standard users will undoubtedly be interested in, meaning that customers with groups of 6-10 will be catered for."
