Mad Penguin Announces Slackware Handbook Project
Jan 28th, 12:37 UTC
New website promises to provide most comprehensive Slackware
Linux documentation by adhering to the Open Source development model.
Jan. 27, 2005 | Las Vegas, NV - >Mad PenguinTM announced today that
they have launched the >Slackware Handbook Project, promised
to be the most complete documentation every created for the oldest Linux
distribution in active development. The handbook will be a very close
cousin to the FreeBSD
Handbook, which is a document noted for its thorough approach to
documenting the operating system. According to sources at Mad Penguin,
there is a void in the current offerings of technical documents available
for the popular open source operating system. "There is nothing like the
FreeBSD Handbook for Linux and our
design may even take it farther then that," says Narayan Newton, Mad
Penguin System Administrator, who was responsible for the original
handbook concept.
Adam Doxtater, Mad
Penguin Founder and Chief Technology Editor, brought the concept to life.
"Not only will we be able to provide a central documentation source for
Slackware Linux, but in keeping with the theory of this model, it will
never be dated" he said today. "There is already a real need for something
like this. We're simply providing the community with the tools it needs to
make it a reality."
The design of the handbook closely adheres to the Open Source software
model, which will ensure only the highest quality content reaches its
pages. Volunteers from around the world will have the ability to author
the content of the handbook, and a 'peer' moderation system will ensure
that the information remains accurate and current. Everyone interested is
encouraged to register with the site (registration is always free) to take
part in the project.
"Think of it as a wiki of sorts. All of the contributors are capable of
editing and adding to the work of others on the project." said Doxtater,
"This will ensure that the documentation is of the highest standard". Mad
Penguin says that the new site is currently in operation and ready for the
general public.

About Slackware Linux
Slackware Linux is a complete 32-bit multitasking "UNIX-like" system. It's
currently based around the 2.4 Linux kernel series and the GNU C Library
version 2.3.2 (libc6). It contains an easy to use installation program,
extensive online documentation, and a menu-driven package system. A full
installation gives you the X Window System, C/C++ development
environments, Perl, networking utilities, a mail server, a news server, a
web server, an ftp server, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, Netscape
Communicator, plus many more programs. Slackware Linux can run on 486
systems all the way up to the latest x86 machines (but uses -mcpu=i686
optimization for best performance on i686-class machines like the P3, P4,
and Duron/Athlon).
