Puget Sound Technology is teaching two classes in Phoenix, Ariz.,
focusing on introductory Unix essentials and fundamental system administration skills. Puget Sound Technology, a provider of open source technical services,
is teaching Unix system administration training the week of December
6 - 10 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. The hands-on training is split
into two classes: a one-day crash course focusing on introductory
or refresher Unix essentials and a four-day course covering
fundamental system administration skills.
The Unix Shell Essentials Crash Course is a high-paced class focusing
on most commonly-used terminology and skills needed for getting
started and recognizing the Unix platform.
The system administration course will cover standard Unix administration
skills, such as cron, syslogging, inetd, user and group administration,
and basic network configurations. Students will also learn the
basics of DNS, SMTP, and Postfix and will setup their own DNS zones
and Apache-based virtual websites.
The Unix system administration course will focus on FreeBSD, but
many skills will also be applicable to Linux and the other *BSDs.
The course topics will also include FreeBSD installation, using
the ports collection (for installing third-party software), updating
FreeBSD, custom kernel configurations, understanding the rc.d
scripts, periodic tasks, and packet filtering.
