Puget Sound Technology is teaching a hands-on class covering the fundamentals of FreeBSD and open source Unix
system administration, June 23 - 27, in Phoenix, Arizona. A hands-on class covering the fundamentals of FreeBSD system
administration will be taught by Puget Sound Technology, June 23
- 27, in Phoenix, Arizona. This training will cover beginning Unix
command-line essentials, FreeBSD installation, system administration
fundamentals, using the ports collection, and the basics of Apache
webserver, DNS and mail server administration.
A widely-used, free, and open source Unix-type operating system,
FreeBSD is known for its networking performance, security and
stability. According to recent research from Netcraft, FreeBSD
powers Yahoo!, Sony Japan, Affinity, pair Networks, and near
40-percent of the top sites with the longest running systems by
average, last, and longest uptimes.
FreeBSD offers multi-processor support, IPsec, IPv6, the stable
UFS filesystem, high-performance disk access, and excellent memory
management. FreeBSD can be used as a network router, NAT gateway,
robust packet filter (using the included IP Filter or IPFW), desktop
workstation, as well as many other common computer tasks.
A default install of FreeBSD includes standard Unix-type software,
sendmail, cron, syslogd, various networking daemons, tcsh, awk,
OpenSSH, the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC), and a complete set of
documentation. FreeBSD also includes NFS, NIS (also known as "yp"),
FTP, BIND for DNS, PPP, and OpenSSL.
Packages are also available for over 7,500 other software products,
including the Apache web server, Samba for Windows file and printer
sharing, XFree86, Bash, and popular programing languages, Perl,
Ruby, and Python.
"Although this class focuses on FreeBSD, many of the skills will
be applicable for Linux and other Unix or BSD administrators," said
Jeremy C. Reed of Puget Sound Technology. "In addition to command-line
skills, the class will cover syslog, cron, security auditing,
building from source, packet filtering, starting and stopping
services, Postfix, and a lot more."
