ASL Inc., a leading provider of award-winning high performance Linux systems, today announced the availability of Intelligent Platform Management Interface ASL Inc., a leading provider of award-winning high performance Linux systems, today announced the availability of Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) to its high performance Linux server and cluster platforms. IPMI is the interface to "intelligent" hardware used to monitor a server's physical health characteristics, such as processor and system temperatures, fans speed and voltage levels. These capabilities provide information that enables system management and recovery in which drive down the total cost of ownership (TCO).
Since IPMI operates over an existing LAN connection, IPMI enabled servers can be managed remotely from any location. IPMI provides vital administrative tasks including:
Real time system health monitoring on vital system components including processor(s), chassis fan(s) and power supply
Powering a system on or off
Resetting a system after a lock up
Hardware watchdog
Logging of critical system events (modem required)
Auto paging when critical system events occur
Console access to view system message during post
Console access to view, set, or or modify BIOS/firmware setting
"In a HPC environment, IPMI plays an important role in the deployment and management of clusters", said ASL VP of Product Development, Tony Sheridan. From a host controller, system administrator can install, monitor and manage all the compute nodes remotely via a Java based interface. Through its built-in console access, IPMI eliminates the need for the KVM switches and cables thus reducing the cost of the clusters. Since individual nodes can be powered cycle on or off remotely, IPMI eliminates the need for the power distribution units with integrated remote management.
For mission critical servers that are running at data center or offsite, IPMI provides an invaluable and indispensable tool for remote management. Since IPMI is accessed via authentication and password protection, security is maintained.
IPMI is provided as a standard feature on ASL Monarch 4800-R4 Quad Intel® XeonTM MP enterprise servers and Lancelot C1853 dual Xeon Beowulf nodes. IPMI is also available as an add-on on other ASL platforms including Lancelot C1852, 1852, 1853, 2852, 4852 and Sovereign 4852 series.
