Tuesday, 12 October 1999. San Francisco, California.

Penguin Computing is pleased to announce the release of the world's first Linux gaming computer. This system is based on the latest high speed multimedia hardware and the most popular commercial games available for Linux bundled together with the Red Hat 6.1 Linux Operating System.

"This is a revolutionary product, designed to bring the emerging Linux game industry together with the world's most reliable Linux computer systems.", said Sam Ockman, President of Penguin Computing.

At its, core the system runs on the all new AMD Athlon 500 MHz processor. The base system also includes 128 MB RAM, to help speed up the action. For screaming 3D rendering, Penguin Computing has included the 3Dfx Voodoo 3000 16MB video card. To fully appreciate the stereo sound effects and music of today's games, they have included the Sound Blaster PCI128 with the Yamaha YST-MS50 Speaker system. With a 10 GB Hard Drive, there is plenty of room to store games. The high speed CD will allow for smooth viewing of those cut scene videos, and with a 3COM / USR 56K Modem as an option, our customers will be equipped to engage others online. And for those yet to be released flight simulators and space combat simulators, the system includes the Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital Joystick.

When asked about the selection of hardware components, the lead developer Garrett Mickelson had this to say, "We feel that the new AMD processors are top multimedia performers, and our in-house tests have shown this to be true. The 3Dfx video card was the best choice for the graphics accelerator, as it is very well supported in Linux and two of the most popular games require it for full acceleration."

For those that need a faster CPU, more memory, or hard disk space, the hardware can be configured to a customer's liking via the Penguin Computing online system configuration tool. Penguin Computing has chosen the finest in commercial games to bundle with this system. These games include the latest Loki products; Civilization: Call to Power & Myth2: The Soulblighter, and also; Quake II with both Mission Packs. They will constantly be changing the bundled software packages as new titles are released. Other software included is Netscape 4.7 optimized for streaming audio and video, and Sun's Star Office 5.1a (Personal Edition). The default graphical user interface is Gnome running with the Enlightenment window manager, though this can be modified to the user's liking, i.e. KDE, Window Maker, Black Box, etc.

Penguin Computing is a leading single source provider of reliable Linux computer systems and support. All systems come with standard 6am-6pm (PST) support and 24x7 and onsite support upgrades. Penguin Computing currently sells its solutions to enterprise clients such as Excite (NASDAQ: XCIT), Sprint, Sony, Fogdog.com, Petstore.com, and Salon.com (NASDAQ: SALN.) In addition to its line of AMD systems, Penguin Computing also offers computers running Intel processors.
