Somers, NY -- July 2, 2002 -- This year at Wimbledon, technology designed for business applications like stock trading on Wall Street is being used to deliver real-time scores and play-by-play Wimbledon action to millions of tennis fans around the world.
IBM's Gryphon software technology is embedded in the downloadable IBM Real-time Scoreboard on www.wimbledon.org. Piloted on the Linux operating system at the French Open earlier this year, IBM is running Gryphon on Linux at Wimbledon for the first time. With this Gryphon technology, fans using IBM's Real-Time Scoreboard will experience Wimbledon as if they were courtside, receiving score updates customized to their specific interests (such as Ladies Tennis) within seconds of play and without having to manually refresh their computer screens. By pairing this software Gryphon with Linux, IBM is hoping to achieve performance enhancements on the Wimbledon Web site of up to 50%.
Pairing Gryphon with Linux, combined with other infrastructure innovations this year, will help IBM achieve expected performance enhancements on the Wimbledon Web site of up to 50%.
"This year is shaping up to be as exciting as last, when over three million people visited the official Wimbledon site," said Laurie Courage, director, Internet strategy and Web events, IBM. "The site puts IBM's technical prowess very much on display, because if the technologies prove their mettle here, they'll survive heavy-duty business use."
Gryphon was developed and patented by IBM Research and is recently made available today to businesses in the product WebSphere MQ Event Broker for information-heavy applications, such as help desks, portals and financial data delivery. WebSphere MQ Event Broker enables businesses to publish information to specific subscribers according to their unique preferences. It delivers real-time, highly personalized information across the network, Internet or pervasive devices, to tens of thousands of users around the world.
On Wall Street, for example, brokerage houses and investment firms need to receive stock prices in real-time as the market shifts and changes. Time wasted sorting unnecessary e-mail information can cost thousands of dollars. With WebSphere MQ Event Broker, brokers are able to be very specific with stock price requests. Instead of receiving all stock prices for orange juice, they can specify that they would like to see all stock activity for the top orange juice vendors from July through September. This allows brokers to make faster decisions, saving time and money.
Because of the Wimbledon testing ground, IBM customers have the advantage of knowing that the technology has been proven on a world stage and is ready to go to work in their IT environments.
