TWiki, a flexible, powerful, and simple Web-based
collaboration platform - New Version
Sep 24th, 22:21 UTC
TWiki is a collaboration platform that allows you to run a
dynamic intranet site, a project development space, a
document management system, a knowledge base, an issue
tracking system or any other groupware application.
San Jose, Tuesday, 25-Sep-2001: TWiki announces a new version
of its popular collaboration platform. TWiki looks and feels like
a normal intranet or Web site. In addition, an Edit link on every
page allows users to freely change or create content. TWiki is
installed on the Web server and can be operated from any Web
browser, without requiring special browser plugins.
Features include automatic link generation, full text search,
authorization based on groups, Web form handling, email
notification of changes, file attachments to Web pages, revision
control of pages and attachments, and more. The new
server-side TWikiPlugins API provides developers with a
simple way to build new groupware applications. Plugins
available now include: Spreadsheet, calendar, TOC, and more.

"The TWiki platform is designed to eliminate the 'one webmaster'
syndrome, where input from many people hits a bottleneck when
only one person is in charge of updates, and intranet content
becomes outdated and inadequate," said Peter Thoeny, creator
and lead developer of TWiki. "Empowering employees to make
changes to the intranet, combined with a peer review of content,
makes sure that content is up-to-date and accurate. Many major
companies in the telecommunication and consumer product
industries depend on TWiki to streamline the information flow
between virtual teams and corporate offices."
"Boy, is it powerful" said Jon Udell, a former executive editor
at Byte Magazine, in his weekly Byte.com column last year.
"Among other things, TWiki eases one of the concerns about
classic Wiki, which is that the radically egalitarian 'edit this page'
scheme leaves no change log. TWiki includes powerful revision
support. Every change leaves a footprint, and you can follow
these easily and effectively."
TWiki Version 01-Sep-2001 is a major new release and includes,
among other enhancements, a Plugins API, attachments under
revision control, a more flexible, modular template system, the
use of skins to define alternate page layouts, TWiki Forms to
define and use multiple input forms per web, the ability to
rename, move and delete pages and attachments through the
browser, the ability to change and reset passwords using forms,
an automatic TOC (Table of Contents), and hierarchical
Navigation based on the topic parenting feature.
TWiki is available for download from the TWiki.org web-site.
