The Open Group Announces Open Source Manageability Services Broker
  Mar 29th, 23:26 UTC

Menlo Park, CA. March 19, 2001
The Open Group today announced the public availability of its open source implementation of a Manageability Services Broker.

As part of its Enterprise Management program, Members of The Open Group have developed an open source implementation of a Manageability Services Broker. The code implements a Common Information Model (CIM) Object Manager based on the CIM standard defined by the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF).

The Pegasus source code, which is written in C++, is publicly available from The Open Group's server, and is being released under an open source license.

With this first release of the source code now available, the members of The Open Group are making a major contribution to the creation of an open management infrastructure, which will bring the following benefits to the IT community:

  • The existence of a common, open, standards-based infrastructure that will greatly simplify the task of gathering instrumentation data from IT systems and distributing it to management system;

  • Writers of management software will be able to focus more of their resources on the value-added task of delivering high-level management functions by reducing the amount of effort that they need to spend on producing low-level data.

  • End-users, operating system developers, and component developers will benefit by an improved ability to produce portable, interoperable instrumentation that is not tied to any specific management product.

The current version of the source code is being released as a snapshot of ongoing work in progress to give the widest possible opportunity for people within the enterprise management community to both comment and contribute to its continuing development.

"The Open Group is pleased to be making this open source software available as art of its Enterprise Management program. By releasing code in this way, backed up later by a Specification of the interfaces, we are adopting a pragmatic approach that demonstrates our willingness to work with the open source community to create effective, open standards which will make a major contribution to creating a common manageability infrastructure. This work represents significant effort from among our Members, especially BMC Software and Tivoli Systems, and we are extremely grateful for their contributions", said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group.

"The DMTF congratulates The Open Group on this major achievement and welcomes the release of the open source for the Manageability Services Broker. By reducing the barriers for industry adoption, this project will contribute to the goal of establishing CIM as a universally available management model. The DMTF is pleased to see the concrete results of its collaboration with The Open Group, one if its Alliance Partner members", said Winston Bumpus, President of the Distributed Management Task Force Inc.

Jennifer Dunvan, Development Manager for DMTF CIM-based serviceability and manageability software for Compaq's NonStop Kernel operating system says, "Compaq has long been a supporter of the Enterprise Management Forum and looks forward to evaluating this software. We feel that open source may be a very effective way of creating a portable, common manageability infrastructure."
