Two new products on Linux+Mac+Windows drive new business model for Appgen Software
  Feb 27th, 21:30 UTC

With the release of Appgen Accounting for Small Business and MyBooks, the company will begin to sell prepackaged products directly to consumers of business and personal finance software

HAUPPAUGE, New York, Feb 27--Appgen Business Software, Inc. implements a new business model, effective immediately. This new business model includes the recent formation of Appgen Personal Software, LLC which, along with Appgen Business Software, Inc., will jointly market business and personal financial management products as "The Appgen Software Companies". Also effective with this announcement, The Appgen Software Companies will begin to sell prepackaged products directly to consumers of business and personal financial software. This will be the first time in the company's history that it has established a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for any of its products. According to President and CEO Jim Kelly, "This new business model reflects the enormous changes that are reverberating throughout the computer industry, and will reposition our products and our Value-Added Resellers (VARs) to take advantage of these changes."

"First among these changes is the fact that the VAR channel is seeing more competition from a resurgence of the ASP model of business management at the same time that they are experiencing post-Y2K sales fatigue and a decline in the world economy. In order to combat these issues effectively, our marketing team decided to establish a truly competitive MSRP so that the Appgen Companies can concentrate on their core businesses of new product development, marketing, and service, while our VARs can concentrate on their core competency of professional services to the SMB market. Along with these changes, we are introducing two new products with major technical enhancements that should be very interesting to everyone in our industry: AppgenŽ Accounting for Small Business and MyBooks."

AppgenŽ Accounting for Small Business is a tightly integrated industrial strength business solution that includes all eleven award-winning high-end PowerWindows Business and Accounting Applications in a package that will compete in the midrange and low-end markets for business management software. What makes this product unique in the low-end market is that these ODBC-compliant applications are completely customizable by the Appgen Professional Services Group or any Appgen-authorized Value-Added Reseller. It is also scalable to hundreds of network seats, and portable between Linux, Windows and Mac OS X platforms right out of the box. These same applications are upgradable to SCO, AIX, Sun Solaris and other Unix platforms in the midrange and high-end markets. Appgen Accounting for Small Business is available right now on both Linux and Windows platforms for $799.99 (plus $9.99 for shipping and handling) direct from Appgen Business Software, Inc. or from any Appgen-Authorized Value-Added Reseller. A new release that will also run on Mac OS X will be available in April 2001. Like all Appgen products, Accounting for Small Business is a secure double-entry accounting system with an audit trail to protect businesses against error, theft, and fraud, and it is also e-business enabled. The Appgen Software companies will also introduce a major new product on April 17, 2001: MyBooksTM.

AppgenŽ MyBooks is a tightly integrated easy-to-use business solution that will be attractive to businesses that are currently using low-end products like QuickBooks or MYOB, or even spreadsheets like Excel. MyBooks includes a five-user license that is portable to Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows platforms right out of the box. It is upgradable to any number of network seats on SCO, AIX, Sun Solaris, and other Unix platforms, and is also completely modifiable at any time by the Appgen Professional Services Group or any Appgen-Authorized VAR. Perhaps the most interesting feature of this new product is its brand new concept in user-interface: Appgen MyBooks employs a user-selectable choice between a "Simple" business management system or a "Total" business management system. The "Simple" interface is a jargon-free approach to business that should appeal to anyone who may still be using a spreadsheet like Excel or a low-end accounting system like QuickBooks. More sophisticated users, or "Simple" users who grow more sophisticated with their business needs may at any time toggle to the "Total" business management mode which will be familiar to any professional bookkeeper, accountant, or controller. We call this our "instant professional upgrade". MyBooks will be released in April 2001 for only $99.99 (plus $9.99 for shipping and handling) direct from Appgen Business Software, Inc. through its website, www.appgen.com.

AppgenŽ PowerWindows Business and Accounting Software will remain as the company's high-end custom product line, to which any user of MyBooks or Accounting for Small Business can easily upgrade without any need to retrain or re-enter data because all three accounting systems are built on the same basic accounting applications, and they all use the same ODBC-compliant database. Additionally, all three product lines can be serviced directly by the Appgen Professional Services Group or any Appgen-Authorized Value-Added Reseller, worldwide.

The introduction of these two new products and the new business model are part of a series of major changes that are designed to increase the company's share of the small-to-midsize business market. Other components of this new business plan include the incorporation of Java into the company's core technology, and a new focus on the MacIntosh market for business and personal financial management software. According to Jim Kelly, "The Linux market remains a viable future world, but we have recently discovered that a huge established base of MacIntosh users are already tuned to the kinds of product and quality that we already have to offer them on OS X."
