Linux World, New York City, January 31, 2001 - Insignia Solutions® (NASDAQ: INSG - news), the leading provider of accelerated JavaTM software solutions for Internet appliances and embedded devices, announced today that it will offer its accelerated, Java-compatible JeodeTM Embedded Virtual MachineTM (EVMTM) technologies to design engineers and LinuxTM programming developers on DevelopOnline.com, an online development center designed to accelerate product time to market. In related news, Jeode technology will be showcased at Linux World this week as part of DevelopOnline's presentation at its booth number 1457. Using DevelopOnline services, it will provide the Java runtime environment for a Pointbase database application running on a Compaq iPAQTM PocketPC powered by MontaVista Software's Hard HatTM Linux operating system. This is the first time that Linux, Java technology and PointBase have been demonstrated on a pocket-sized mobile computer.

Insignia's partnership with DevelopOnline is part of Insignia's strategy to make the Jeode platform the premier Java-compatible virtual machine solution for Linux-based Internet appliances and embedded devices. DevelopOnline is an Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC- news) spinout company that speeds the creation of handheld devices, set top boxes, network appliances, and other electronic products by providing convenient remote access to proven platforms and new technology from leading providers, all via an Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

"The Linux development community needs accelerated Java solutions, so we are making our Jeode virtual machine technologies available to them via DevelopOnline," said Ron Workman, senior vice president of marketing with Insignia Solutions. "DevelopOnline provides an attractive one-stop shop that enables developers to conveniently evaluate and build prototype Jeode technology-enhanced Internet appliances and embedded devices. Their product development acceleration site provides quick access to our Jeode technology, facilitating faster time-to-market. We join several of our partners who have made or intend to make their technologies available on DevelopOnline, including Metrowerks, MontaVista Software, Pointbase and ProSyst."

"DevelopOnline recognizes the need for an accelerated, robust Java solution and is excited to make Insignia's Jeode technology available to our Linux developers," said Alan Steinberg, president and CEO of DevelopOnline. "Jeode technology enables developers to have the best of both worlds - Java and Linux technologies - in developing their innovative Internet appliances and embedded devices."

"Linux has proven to the world that it can provide a feature rich operating system with rock-solid 24 x 7 reliability - just what's required by today's businesses," stated Bruce Scott, chief executive officer of PointBase, Inc. "The combination of PointBase and Jeode technology enables application developers to simplify, accelerate and economize the development of platform-independent Java database applications. The demonstration at Linux World using DevelopOnline application development services proves to developers that the combination of Linux, PointBase and Jeode technology equals killer Java-based applications for mobile devices, digital set-top boxes, in-car entertainment systems, networking infrastructure and other types of embedded products."

"Insignia's participation in DevelopOnline provides yet another important venue for Linux developers to benefit from our collective technologies," said Jim Ready, president and chief executive officer of MontaVista Software. "Jeode technology enhances the Hard HatTM Linux operating system with a high performance and responsive Java runtime environment that has proven itself to be quite popular with Internet appliance and embedded device developers."

"Convenient access to Jeode technology, along with CodeWarrior development tools, enables developers to quickly deliver Java-enabled Internet-connected devices to the market," said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, of Metrowerks. "By leveraging our respective technologies, developers benefit from a fully-compliant and comprehensive Java-based development and runtime environment."

"Insignia is a very important partner in our goal to provide fast, reliable OSGI application framework solutions for Internet appliances and embedded devices," said George Getzin, executive vice president with ProSyst USA. "Their accelerated Jeode technology is a key component of our mBedded server and mBedded developer studio. By offering our technology and professional services via DevelopOnline, together with our partners we can give developers access to verified and tightly integrated hardware and software solutions, providing them with compatibility, fast time-to-market and peace-of-mind."

Jeode Platform

The Jeode platform is Insignia's accelerated software implementation of Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava specifications tailored for Internet appliances and embedded devices. At the core of the Jeode platform is the first independently-developed "Sun Authorized Virtual Machine", the Jeode Embedded Virtual MachineTM (EVMTM), an accelerated runtime engine that delivers an optimal balance of performance and responsiveness in a smaller memory footprint. Using a proprietary technique called dynamic adaptive compilation, the Jeode EVM can execute Java applications on average six times faster than interpretive VMs in roughly the same amount of memory.

Key attributes include:

  • A full-featured software implementation compatible with Sun's PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava specifications
  • Industry leading accelerated performance and efficient memory utilization
  • Configurability and tunability to meet the diverse needs of Internet appliance and embedded device developers
  • A turn-key software solution already ported and tested on popular RTOS/processor combinations
  • World class support, training, consulting, customization and development tools
It currently supports operating systems such as Windows CE (including the Pocket PC version), Windows NT Embedded, Windows NT, VxWorks, ITRON, Nucleus and Linux, and processors such as MIPS, ARM, Intel x86, PowerPC and Hitachi SH-3 and SH-4.
