LinuxCare Labs Addresses Need for Independent Linux Certifications With Industry's First Tiered Testing Services

Linuxcare Certifies 3ware, Ecrix Storage Components in Real-World Customer Environments

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 22, 2001--Linuxcare, Inc., a leader in providing comprehensive professional services and solutions for Linux and open-source technologies, unveiled today a suite of tiered testing services for enterprise Linux deployments. Aimed toward original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), independent hardware and software vendors (IHVs and ISVs), Linuxcare Labs Enterprise Services provides rigorous and comprehensive product-based testing and certification, so that vendors can confidently and quickly deliver optimized products to their end customers. Through its new services, Linuxcare Labs has tested and certified 3ware Inc.'s Escalade 6800 ATA Raid Controller and Ecrix Corp.'s VXA-1 tape drive in enterprise Linux environments.

In today's unforgiving market, a company's bottom line increasingly depends on being able to launch a product or solution faster than the competition. Many OEMs, IHVs and ISVs lack Linux or open-source knowledge and expertise, nor do they have the time or the staff to thoroughly test a Linux solution and guarantee compatibility with other Linux products. These companies can turn to Linuxcare to provide an independent certification and methodology for Linux deployment. Linuxcare Labs applies a real-world, working knowledge of Linux, approaching testing and certification from the customer perspective. In addition, Linuxcare's position as a services firm allows it to provide its testing services independent of any single Linux distribution.

"Linuxcare Labs does much more than simply confirm that a product will run within the Linux environment," said Kevin Conners, director of product marketing of 3ware. "Linuxcare operates as a true partner in our Linux market application strategy so we can objectively evaluation the ease of deployment and manageability of our products."

Linuxcare Labs offers these three new levels of testing services: Enterprise Certification, Software Product Evaluation and Solution Validation.

  • Enterprise Certification tests address key enterprise capabilities that many of today's IT managers require, such as extended functionality, interoperability and performance characterization.
  • Software Product Evaluation is a service offered for ISVs only. It tests the proper installation, configuration, compatibility and operation of software that is developed for or ported to Linux.
  • Solution Validation allows vendors to ensure basic functionality of a product used in a predefined hardware platform and software stack. A solution configuration how-to guide, a "cookbook," outlining the basic processes involved in implementing and deploying the tested solution is included. Enterprise certification is a prerequisite for a solution validation.

The new services complement Linuxcare's current testing and validation offerings:

  • e-Test is the first free, open-source tool that OEMs and IHVs can download and run to verify whether their systems and components are compatible with Linux.
  • Standard Certification validates proper operation of a hardware product under the Linux kernel OS environment and leading Linux distributions.
  • Mission-Critical Certification extends Enterprise Certification to test RAS (reliability, availability and scalability) features.
  • "With the rapid maturation of Linux, business customers are increasingly interested in proven methodologies and techniques that ensure successful deployment of Linux and open-source software in the enterprise," said Douglas Mackbee general manager, Linuxcare Labs. "Linuxcare fills this void by providing independent testing services that validate products and solutions for use in Linux and open-source environments."
