Lutris Enhydra 3.5 Java/XML Application Server For Wired And Wireless Devices Released To Manufacturing
  Dec 20th, 01:26 UTC

Scheduled to ship this month, Lutris Enhydra 3.5 includes technologies from Motorola, Nokia, Pixo, Sun, Borland and RadView

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., December 18, 2000 -- Lutris Technologies Inc., a leading open source enterprise software and services company, today announced that Lutris Enhydra 3.5, the first application server capable of supporting major wireless protocols and delivering applications to the broadest range of wireless and wired devices, has been released to manufacturing and may now be ordered online. Lutris Enhydra 3.5 includes smart phone emulators from leading mobile phone manufacturers, Nokia, Motorola and Pixo, as well as development tools from Borland, Sun and RadView to give developers a complete suite of tools to quickly build and easily manage wired and wireless applications.

Lutris Enhydra 3.5 is the industry's most complete application server and development platform for delivering applications to wired and wireless devices including mobile phones, PDAs, handheld computers, desktops, and laptops. To ensure that independent software vendors (ISVs), systems integrators (Sis), and corporate IT departments have the necessary technologies to meet the demands of wireless development, and to address the lack of global standards, Lutris Enhydra 3.5 supports the leading presentation protocols, including HTML, WML, cHTML, XHTML, VoiceXML and the new J2ME/MIDp protocols for the emerging Java phones.

Lutris Enhydra 3.5 leverages Enhydra XMLC, a unique technology developed by Lutris, to guarantee that developers are not required to write a separate code base for each targeted device. Enhydra XMLC effectively separates business logic from presentation design, enabling a "one-to-many" approach that significantly decreases time to market and dramatically improves application manageability.

"The wireless boom has clearly shown the limitations in most of today's application server technologies which require developers to needlessly repeat work to support the diverse suite of presentation protocols being used around the world," said Yancy Lind, president and CEO at Lutris. "The lack of international protocol standards--and the need to target many devices from one application--has greatly slowed the adoption of wireless Internet technology for business use. Lutris Enhydra 3.5 eliminates the current barriers, setting the stage for rapid development and deployment of many wireless applications."

To ensure that developers, ISVs and SIs have the necessary technologies to effectively develop and deploy multi-device applications, Lutris has entered into a number of agreements with leading vendors to integrate key technologies with Lutris Enhydra 3.5. These include Borland's JBuilder 4.0 Foundation and Forte for Java Community Edition for Windows, Linux, and Solaris: these integrated development environments provide Enhydra developers with leading Java rapid application development (RAD) tools. Lutris Enhydra 3.5 also includes RadView's WebLoad for Windows, offering users automated load-testing capabilities that ensure the scalability of Enhydra applications.

Lutris also has forged significant agreements with Motorola, Nokia and Pixo to provide critical development tools to developers building and deploying mobile applications. Lutris Enhydra 3.5 includes Motorola's J2ME/MIDp emulator for the company's next-generation Condor family of iDEN phones, giving developers a convenient means to see immediately the way the application being built will appear on Motorola's J2ME-compliant handsets. Further, Lutris Enhydra 3.5 includes Nokia's 7110 emulator and WAP gateway as well as Pixo's cHTML emulators for developing i-mode applications. Additionally, comprehensive documentation and source code for sample applications give developers a solid foundation from which to begin building and deploying wireless applications.

AirSent, the sample field dispatch and delivery application included with Lutris Enhydra 3.5, provides developers with a sound model for building other time-sensitive, mobile applications. The AirSent application can deliver data to a wide variety of devices supporting HTML, WML, J2ME/MIDp, and cHTML including phones using WAP, I-Mode and J2ME.

"The agreements that Lutris has forged will allow a broad audience to fully leverage the power of Lutris Enhydra 3.5," continued Lind. "With this product, and with the help of our partners, we have introduced an application server capable of meeting the challenging needs of businesses that are looking to extend their Internet applications to wireless devices of all types."
