Data Backup and Recovery Software from Workstation Solutions Qualified for VA Linux 9205 NAS System

AMHERST, N.H. and FREMONT, Calif., October 17, 2000 Workstation Solutions, a leader in innovative data protection software, and VA Linux Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LNUX), the expert provider of Linux and Open Source solutions for the Web, have tested and qualified Workstation Solution's Quick RestoreTM for the new VA Linux 9205 NAS system.

The proven Quick Restore data backup and recovery software provides seamless integration among NAS, Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms in heterogeneous network environments. It uses the industry-standard Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) for local or remote backup of network-attached storage (NAS) systems to industry-leading tape drives and libraries.

Quick Restore 2.7, which was announced today by Workstation Solutions, provides flexible, fail-safe, high-volume data protection for VA Linux's new storage platform. The VA Linux 9205 NAS system is a convenient, ultradense 2U (3.5-inch-high) storage appliance that leverages VA's expertise in Open Source software and high-density Linux systems engineering. Workstation Solutions, the leader in innovative data backup and recovery solutions, offers unique expertise in NAS and Linux; it was the first backup solution in the industry to support all four possible configurations defined by NDMP and first to offer an enterprise-ready Linux-based backup server.

"Workstation Solutions' expertise in NDMP-based backup and recovery of NAS systems brings an extra measure of support to our customers," observed Gregg Zehr, vice president of engineering, VA Linux Systems. "Quick Restore complements 9205 NAS features designed for maximum reliability and minimal downtime, such as the ext3 journaling file system, RAID 5, and easy installation and management."

"Quick Restore offers customers a proven, reliable solution," according to Jim Ward, president of Workstation Solutions. "VA Linux customers can use Quick Restore to create a flexible, scalable data protection strategy that meets the high-volume needs of e-businesses and other enterprises."

VA Linux worked with Workstation solutions to test and qualify the interoperability of Quick Restore with the VA Linux 9205 NAS system using the NDMP protocol. Using NDMP, Quick Restore can centrally manage and control distributed data on NAS systems while minimizing network traffic. Quick Restore's robust implementation of NDMP enables it to provide flexible, reliable data protection solutions on the 9205 NAS. VA Linux and Workstation Solutions are early adopters of the NDMP protocol and leaders in the NDMP Working Group of the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), which defines the architecture and standardization of NDMP.
