"Visual Basic for Linux" available for download now
  Sep 28th, 20:38 UTC

Phoenix Object Basic is a unique object-oriented RAD tool for Linux. It combines the expressive power of object-oriented languages like Python and Perl with the familiarity and ease of use of Visual Basic.

Janus Software is happy to announce the immediate release of Phoenix Object Basic, a Linux native Rapid Application Development tool, that combines "visual programming" with the familiar Basic programming language. VB developers will feel at home immediately with Phoenix.

Recent market research has shown that there are about 7.5 million active VB developers and that around 40% of those developers want to develop for Linux this year. We are happy to be the first to market with a package that precisely meets their needs. It gives us great pleasure to be able to invite some 3 million developers to join the Linux community and be part of the Open Source revolution.

Deploy your Visual Basic skills on Linux with Phoenix

Phoenix Object Basic is a unique object-oriented RAD tool for Linux. It combines the expressive power of object-oriented languages like Python and Perl with the familiarity and ease of use of Visual Basic. Phoenix allows developers with Visual Basic experience to start developing for Linux without having to face a steep learning curve: Phoenix uses the familiar visual design paradigm and has a full implementation of the Basic language.

The highlights:

  • Rapid Application Development for Linux
  • Very short learning curve for VB developers
  • Data aware
  • Fully object-oriented: use inheritance and polymorphism
  • Small executables, Fast execution
  • Cross platform

Use your experience and build on your existing VB code base to create Linux solutions:

  • Easily build Linux GUI applications
  • Quickly build a graphical user interface for your existing Linux application
  • Integrate your company with the Internet:
    - Linux is the ideal web server platform
    - Phoenix is ideal for creating the "glue" business logic
  • Create stable "server closet" business logic applications starting from your current code

License

Janus Software is a firm believer in Open Source software, but Phoenix is not currently Open Source. The Phoenix code base has evolved over a seven year time frame and during that time some code has been included under license from third parties. The conditions of these licenses force us to place Phoenix under a classical, closed source license.

We do not believe in software "with the hood welded shut" and are working hard to remove the third party components. We trust that we can share the source code of Phoenix with the user community in the first quarter of 2001. Until such time, Phoenix is available under a shareware license.

On the website are detailed instructions for downloading and installing Phoenix Object Basic. Several leading distributors will include Phoenix Object Basic with their distributions, starting this Fall, and we expect several more to join the bandwagon soon.
