hardware
recognition.
The UK head office of SuSE Linux , Europe's leading distributor of the Linux open source operating system, has
announced the
latest release of SuSE Linux version 7.0 Professional and Personal. Version 7.0 Professional offers experienced
users all the
proven Linux features for use as a server operating system and version 7.0 Personal is tailored for new Linux users
and desktop
users.
SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional provides IT professionals and ambitious home users with a popular, comprehensive
collection of more
than 1500 updated Linux tools and software packages. For installation purposes, the user is provided with a range of
six CD-ROMs
and one DVD. Users will also receive additional software packages on the DVD which exceed the scope of the six
CD-ROMs.
Intranet and Internet solutions can be realised with 7.0 Professional, just as heterogeneous networks can be connected
and
protected. Professional users are offered all the necessary tools to enable them to use the Web, proxy, mail and news
servers
under Linux. Proven as a file and print server, 7.0 Professional is also an ideal server system for very large and
complex
database applications thanks to an enhanced raw device support and 4 GB main memory addressing. The optimised support
for fully
automated installation and SuSE's new ALICE tool (Automatic Linux Installation and Configuration Environment), allow
efficient
configuration management for computer networks.
Installation support for the 7.0 Professional version includes a SuSE Hotline and 90 days support in the purchase
price of
£41.70 + VAT.
SuSE Linux 7.0 Personal is designed to target Linux newcomers and home users who want to become acquainted with free
Unix clones
on a desktop computer. Three CD-ROMs provide the core operating system and multiple applications include games,
multimedia,
imaging and Internet.
StarOffice 5.2 is a complete office package, including word processing, spreadsheets and presentation and with a
revised import
and export filter, smooth data exchange is possible with other office applications.
To a large extent, installation is now carried out automatically with the YaST2 set up tool, using the extended
hardware
recognition. Peripheral devices, such as sound cards and printers, as well as Internet access configuration via modem
and ISDN,
can be carried out with a few simple key entries. Three entry level manuals will make the newcomer readily and
easily familiar
with the new system. The 60 day installation support is included in the purchase price of £24.70 + VAT.
SuSE is also releasing version 7.0 Professional Update for experienced Linux users. The scope of software is the same
as for
SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional, but instead of the detailed SuSE manual, condensed documentation provides information on
the most
important enhancements.
Version 7.0 will be available from late August.
