The first release of Linux software for FlashPath is certified with Red Hat 6.2. For other versions of Linux, the kernel must be revision 2.2.n. Naples, FL -- June 6, 2000 -- SmartDisk Corporation (Nasdaq: SMDK), a company whose products simplify the digital lifestyle, announced today that support for the Linux operating system (OS) has been integrated into its FlashPathTM for SmartMediaTM floppy disk adapter for digital appliances. This extends FlashPath's OS support to the growing base of consumer and professional users who are incorporating the open source interface into their networks and desktops both at home and at the office. The software is certified by Linuxcare, Inc., a leader in comprehensive consulting and professional services for the Linux community.
"Linux users traditionally have been leaders in adopting new, innovative technologies, including digital appliances such as digital cameras," said Bob Protheroe, Senior Vice President, Development and Engineering for SmartDisk. "As a low-cost, open, scalable, and highly robust operating system, Linux is an ideal platform for an easy-to-use consumer product like FlashPath. We are delighted to work with a well-regarded company like Linuxcare to provide FlashPath support for Linux users."
"FlashPath's floppy disk-sized format makes it an easy and convenient way for Linux users to transfer data from digital appliances to PCs, notebooks and the Internet," said David L. Sifry, Chief Technology Officer at Linuxcare. "SmartDisk and Linuxcare share a dedication to offering flexible, comprehensive, and easy-to-use solutions for the Linux community. We expect this to be the beginning of a collaborative relationship between our two companies."
The first release of Linux software for FlashPath is certified with Red Hat 6.2. For other versions of Linux, the kernel (the essential center of the Linux operating system) must be revision 2.2.n.
Digital images transferred to the PC via FlashPath can be manipulated using any of several Linux photo-editing programs available for download from the Internet.
FlashPath's data transfer speed is also greater than the transfer speeds of the serial port readers currently available to Linux users. Its portable size and lack of cables and connectors also make FlashPath the ideal flash memory reader for those consumers who use Linux both at home and at the office.
FlashPath adapters are available for three of the leading flash memory types: Toshiba's SmartMedia, Sony's Memory Stick, and SanDisk's MultiMediaCard. FlashPath for Sony's Memory StickTM is distributed on a worldwide basis by Sony Corporation under its own brand name called Memory Stick/Floppy Disk Adapter.
Driver Availability
FlashPath for SmartMedia Linux drivers are now available from SmartDisk's Web site at www.smartdisk.com. Additionally, Linux driver support for FlashPath for Sony's Memory Stick and SanDisk's MultiMediaCard is planned for later this year.
