New IBM software products, available later this year, will
provide high-speed connections between Linux applications and S/390 data,
transaction, and messaging services; data management and web-serving
capabilities for Linux applications; Java; and Tivoli management support.
SOMERS, N.Y. -- May 17, 2000 -- IBM S/390 customers can draw from a broad
portfolio of e-business software to integrate Linux applications into the
enterprise. New IBM software products, available later this year, will
provide high-speed connections between Linux applications and S/390 data,
transaction, and messaging services; data management and web-serving
capabilities for Linux applications; Java; and Tivoli management support.
Among the planned lineup of IBM software to support Linux for the S/390
server are:
- IBM e-business Enterprise Connectors. These gateways provide easy
access from Linux applications to applications and data running on S/390
enterprise host operating systems, including OS/390, VM and VSE. The
connectors will include:
-- DB2 Connect
-- IMS Connect
-- MQSeries Client for Java
-- CICS Transaction Gateway
- IBM DB2 Universal Database. The foundation for tens of thousands of e-
business applications, DB2 Universal Database is the first and only
database to fully integrate Web, business intelligence and content
management capabilities. It combines the speed required for Internet
searching with the scalability, performance and availability of a
powerful relational database.
- IBM WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition, with Java 2 support.
WebSphere is the industry's leading Web application software platform.
The Advanced Edition is a high-performance system capable of running web
applications that deliver thousands of business transactions per second
on the S/390 platform. It enables easy integration of existing
resources from multiple systems into a single, logical application.
- Tivoli Framework end-point support, including software distribution,
security management, and Tivoli inventory capabilities.
IBM also announced plans to offer Tivoli Storage Manager Client for Linux
for S/390, which will provide automated backup, archive and disaster recovery
services for managing and protecting Linux data.
The IBM middleware for Linux for S/390 will give customers flexibility to
use Linux as a web server to link mission-critical applications running on
S/390 operating systems directly to the Web. Customers also can take
advantage of S/390 reliability, security, scalability and nonstop operation to
run Linux applications concurrently with other line-of-business applications,
such as enterprise resource planning, customer service, and supply chain
management.
In addition, customers can take advantage of the new middleware
capabilities to increase the integration and performance of the Linux
applications running on the S/390. For example, back-end mission critical
applications running on OS/390, VM or VSE will be accessible, at near memory
speeds, bypassing the network connection between the two applications.
Customers also can gain the inherent cost savings of consolidating
workloads from literally hundreds of Linux systems onto a single S/390 system.
Availability
Beta versions of the IBM e-business Enterprise Connectors for Linux for
S/390, IBM DB2 Universal Database for Linux for S/390, and IBM WebSphere
Application Server, Advanced Edition, with Java 2 support, and Tivoli
Framework support will be available in the third quarter of 2000. General
availability will follow in the fourth quarter. Pricing will be announced at
the time of general availability.
The release date for Tivoli Storage Manager Client for Linux for S/390
will be announced later this year.
