Open source Flash player expands its marketing and funding

Santa Clara, California - April 22nd, 2009 - Linux Fund has expanded its partnership with Sandro Santilli of the Gnash media player team to bring OpenStreetMap editing support to this open source Flash® player. This work will also improve YouTube compatibility and joins Linux Fund's existing effort to bring the Real Time Messaging Protocol support to Gnash.

"I am excited about having Gnash fully support OpenStreetMap because together these projects can really demonstrate what amazing things can be done with free software." says Rob Savoye of the Open Media Now! Foundation.

"As a GIS specialist and open source evangelist, I am delighted to be working with Sandro and Rob on OpenStreetMap support." says Linux Fund executive director David Mandel.

Gnash is an Open Media Now! Foundation initiative that is part of the GNU Project. Flash is an animation file format pioneered by Macromedia which continues to be supported by their successor company, Adobe. Flash has been extended to include audio and video content, and programs written in ActionScript, an ECMAScript-compatible language. Gnash is based on GameSWF and supports most SWF v7 functionality, plus portions of SWF v8 and v9.
