Open-Source Leader to Offer Robust Graphical User Interface for Linux and Other Platforms

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 29, 1999 - Cygnus Solutions, the leader in open-source software, today announced plans to release the source code to Cygnus Insight*, a graphical user interface (GUI) for the industry-standard GNU debugger, GDB. Known in programming circles as GDBtk, the Cygnus Insight GUI provides the technology for effective and efficient debug sessions by improving a software developer's ability to visualize, manage, and examine the status of a program as it is debugged.

This sophisticated debugging technology adds a series of intuitive views into the debug process and provides developers with a wide range of system information. The source code for Cygnus Insight debugger will be available from Cygnus in July on http://sourceware.cygnus.com/gdb.

"The release of the source code to the popular and powerful Insight Debugger reinforces Cygnus' continued commitment to open source software," said Alex Daly, president and CEO, Cygnus Solutions. "As the original and largest open source software company, it is fair to expect that we will continue to drive forward this powerful software development movement and methodology."

Insight Debugger Features

· Display of mixed-mode/split-screen source and assembly level code
· Windows for break points and watch variables
· Graphical stack display for quick navigation
· Function browser
· Editable Register and Memory displays
· Target dialog for easily downloading and running on remote targets

"What we're seeing today is a convergence of two very powerful forces," said Michael Tiemann, founder, Cygnus Solutions. "The GNU debugger is arguably the most powerful debugger in the world and the de facto debugger for all Linux development. Microsoft developers are looking at Linux as a new development platform because it is the most rapidly growing market for their next generation applications. This new visual interface will make the power of GDB accessible to developers familiar with the Windows environment."

Most software programs when first written contain bugs. Debuggers are software programs that help software programmers locate and fix bugs during the design process. On average, developers spend the majority of their time in the debug cycle during software development.

Leadership Role in GNU Technologies Cygnus is the leading driver of innovations to the GNU source code (including debuggers and compilers) through the company's own development efforts as well as folded-in contributions from the Internet community. In fact, Cygnus GNUPro development tools feature the industry leading GNU compiler - the toolchain used to build the Linux kernel and the GNU debugger that is backed by ten years of Cygnus expertise in porting (and maintaining) the GNU technology to more than 125 host/target combinations.

Cygnus Cygnus Solutions, the leader in open-source software and an innovating force in Internet software infrastructure, offers development tools and operating systems based on an open source model. From GNUPro Toolkit and Code Fusion Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to eCosÔ, the Embedded Cygnus Operating System, Cygnus' open source and royalty-free software benefits Linux, Windows NT/95, and UNIX systems developers in a wide variety of market segments, including consumer electronics, Internet, telecommunications, office automation, networking, aerospace and automotive. Cygnus' products, custom engineering services, and developer support services enable customers to bring products to market faster at reduced system development costs. Founded in 1989, with headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, Cygnus has sales and engineering offices throughout North America, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
